My interview with PARIAH star, Adepero Oduye

Actress Adepero Oduye received the Rising Star Award at the Starz Denver Film Festival for her work in PARIAH. The dazzling young actress tells Eden about the making of the film, and how she won the part.

Next, Eden introduces viewers to the playwright of THE WHALE, which was chosen from last year's Colorado New Play Summit and is currently being rehearsed by the Denver Center Theatre Company for its world premiere.

Finally, Alan Dominguez tells Eden about his Colorado-produced documentary, PHOTOS OF ANGIE. The film follows the murder trial of Angie Zapata, and how her family coped with the national attention it received.

The Denver Post announced the winners of the 2011 Ovation Awards on Christmas Day, & this was a wonderful surprise. This program allows me to cover creative people in a way often reserved for celebrities. The longer format interviews let us learn about them and their work. I'm grateful for the access offered by the creative people we feature.

In Focus with Eden Lane is made easier to produce due to the contributions of time and talent by: Don Gassaway, Tom Biddle, Brian Spinner, Todd Geer, Ken Young, and Brandon Stiller. Colorado Public Television provided me with a platform and the vote of confidence of a prime-time slot.

The decade of work John Moore has produced as the Denver Post Entertainment & Theater Reporter / Critic is as impressive in scope as it is thoughtfulness. To be recognized in his work, and treated as a colleague, is a humbling honor.

Mornings are hectic for everyone I know. Get the kids ready, husband, and yourself out the door, with everything you need for the day ....including a good breakfast and a positive attitude....

With all that at stake I know there will be times when the phone rings, something work related needs my attention...it's not that often, but it does happen. The impulse to pick up the phone and respond is strong, but I try to resist whenever I can. Today I saw a call come in from someone who doesn't call often. What could it be? Is something wrong? But I resisted, put the phone down, and saw my daughter's face. She seemed to wonder why I didn't answer the call. "That's what voice mail is for." I said. The smile on her face was the best reward.

Middle School "face paint"

Makeup is a right of passage in my daughter's peer group. Last year she was allowed to wear tinted lip balm and mascara to school. Over the summer we practiced additional techniques - eyeshadow (in a neutral pallet) subtle blush, etc. She really wanted to try foundation this year, but I resisted. I didn't want her to become fixated on a look too mature and "done".

Since I want her to wear sunscreen everyday we compromised. A tinted moisturizer with a 30 SPF by Aveeno made both of us happy. She keeps her youthful, age appropriate look, protects her skin, and feels sophisticated and polished.

The pleasant surprise is she didn't add much time to her morning routine, and still made her bed before leaving for the bus. :-)

Now if I could find a way to make her happy with her hair.... :-/

Grey Gardens the Musical is making it's regional premiers at the Vintage Theatre. Based on the 1975 documentary of the same title, Grey Gardens is the story of Jacqueline Kennedy's aunt, Edith Ewing Bouvier ;Beale (Big Edie) and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie).

The musical tracks the progression of the Beale's fall from a rich and privileged existence to an isolated life in a home overrun by cats. Grey Gardens is an exciting and ambitious undertaking as the small company's second musical.

Eden meets with Craig Bond the Vintage Theatre artistic director, who also serves as director for this production. She also takes us on the stage with the leading ladies of this quirky and moving work.

Statement by the President on the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010

Today, the Senate has taken an historic step toward ending a policy that undermines our national security while violating the very ideals that our brave men and women in uniform risk their lives to defend. By ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love.

As Commander-in-Chief, I am also absolutely convinced that making this change will only underscore the professionalism of our troops as the best led and best trained fighting force the world has ever known. And I join the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as the overwhelming majority of service members asked by the Pentagon, in knowing that we can responsibly transition to a new policy while ensuring our military strength and readiness.

I want to thank Majority Leader Reid, Senators Lieberman and Collins and the countless others who have worked so hard to get this done. It is time to close this chapter in our history. It is time to recognize that sacrifice, valor and integrity are no more defined by sexual orientation than they are by race or gender, religion or creed. It is time to allow gay and lesbian Americans to serve their country openly. I urge the Senate to send this bill to my desk so that I can sign it into law.

Colorado's primaries will be over in a matter of hours, and it has been a fascinating campaign season. Of course there is much more to come as we gear up for the general election, which promises to be equally compelling. Who ever said mid-term elections lacked interest?

Just after the State wide caucuses (yes Colorado has both a Caucus and a Primary) I began a new television project, "Eden Meets West", as a series of one to one interviews with interesting Coloradans. My first guest was Andrew Romanoff. Here is the in studio portion of the program.

I tried many times to get the other candidates, Michael Bennet, Ken Buck, and Jane Norton, for similar episodes, but without success. Ken Buck gave me a brief stand up at the Republican State Assembly which I posted earlier.

This new project wont be devoted solely to political interviews. "Eden Meets West" will feature interesting people and organizations from all aspects of our western life.

Last night I attended the opening of South Pacific at the DCPA.

Run, don't walk to get your tickets.

It is a shining gem, a wonderful experience. The entire cast is superb, and the staging is spot on. (Carmen Cusack as Nellie Forbush was a delight and reminded me of a young Celeste Holm)

Don't think this is just an old classic. This production is relevant and vital, and the material is part of the foundation of American musical theater. This foundation can help you appreciate the contemporary work in the theater while providing a special, and moving experience.

If it sounds like I'm gushing.... it's only because I am.

Sad news regarding The Shadow Theater Company

A sad and important story for Colorado Theater. And Mr Moore states the reason perfectly in the comments section:

"Why are we covering this story so thoroughly? And the answer is simple: Because it matters. Because Shadow Theatre matters. To all of us.
Theater companies come and go, but Shadow is the only fully operating theater company in Colorado telling black stories. There's more at stake with its potential passing than with most any other company in Colorado. "

I sincerely hope for a positive resolution for the company. We need these voices in our community.

Our guests and contributors will continue to highlight Colorado voices, and now we can easily include those perspectives outside of Colorado in ways the viewers can't get anywhere else.

OUTSpoken begins this next step as a series of prime time specials, which allows us time to respond to the interests, ideas, and needs of the audience. This time slot demonstrates the ongoing commitment KBDI has for LGBT community voices, and is a rare step for a mainstream media outlet.

Our team retains members who have been involved from the beginning, while adding strong new voices. Nita Mosby Henry, Founder and Director of The Kaleidoscope Project, will provide regular commentary. Drew Wilson, of milehighgayguy.com, promises to bring features and interviews, and Matt Kailey, managing editor of Out Front Colorado will be part of regular panel discussions.

I hope the viewers see OUTSpoken as their broadcast, and help us create the program they want.

Pop superstar Rihanna’s public revelations about an abusive relationship underscore the importance of this special edition of InFocus with Eden Lane.

Young Adult novels, also known as YA Lit, are more than Vampires, Wizards, and First Love Romances. This week Eden sits down with Julie Anne Peters. A successful YA author, Julie lives in Colorado and has received commercial success and critical acclaim. (a National Book Award finalist) Most of Julie's novels have Gay. Lesbian, or Transgender teens as major characters. Julie invited Eden to her rare book signing event at the Tattered Cover for Rage: A Love Story which explores domestic violence within a young lesbian couple.

We meet Julie and learn about the genesis of this project. Some of Julie's teen readers who identify as LGBT explain why they love Julie's work and how it affects their lives. More than an author profile, this edition of In Focus with Eden Lane will open important discussions or build on those already begun in the wake of Rihanna's public experience with an abusive relationship.

This edition Eden Lane will feature the final segment of a two-part profile on the Arvada Center. Rod Lansberrgy, artistic producer for both the Main State and the Black Box Theatre will provide a behind-the-scenes info. Bev Newcomb-Madden, director of The Second Tosca, will discuss her view of Colorado Theater as well as the new production. Eden will also meet up with The Second Tosca cast members after a performance to get their insights for viewers.
